What has changed since you were in school? If you are a student, what have you heard your parents say has changed (because I know they have told you)? I have two teenagers, and I can honestly say that the phrase,” when I was your age…,” has probably come out of my mouth a lot.
Here are a few changes that I can easily note:
- We had no cell phones. Our school lobby had a pay phone.
- We did not have laptops provided by our school. We brought pencils and paper… and wrote in cursive.
- We did not have a computer class. We had typing class… on typewriters.
- We had to go to the library for sources to use for our essays (which were handwritten) and sometimes had to use microfiche to look up articles. (There was no typing a topic into a search engine in the comfort of your home and immediately having all of the information at your fingertips.)
- We did not have a guard, a police officer, or a metal detector at our school. (And yes, I attended public high school).
- We were still assigned lockers.
- I even had a teacher that asked if anyone would be offended if he read the Bible each morning aloud. No one opposed, so he did.
- Since we did not have cell phones, texting while driving was not an issue.
- Normal network television programming did not require ratings nor did video games.
- We could carry a backpack or a purse into a school ballgame without it having to be clear.
- We wrote checks or paid in cash… fast food did not accept cards… and, well, again paying with your phone was clearly not an option.
- We had no social media. We talked to each other on a landline phone. (We had cordless phones… but most people still had the curly wire, so your location was pretty much stationary as long as you were talking on the phone.)
Obviously, a lot more has changed than the things on my list (such as prices), but the point is our world is constantly changing. In my opinion, and as a Christian, many of the changes have not been for the better. In my opinion, we are allowing the devil to gain more and more access into our homes through the content that is contained in the programming and through our technological devices that are a window to… anything and everything. While the devil only needs a crack in the door in which to stick his foot, I believe that we have made it quite easy for him and just opened a giant door as wide as we can.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that all of the progress we have made is bad. Technology is a wonderful avenue to share the Gospel. We can reach so many people right from our computers. Our children have access to so much research and educational information. We are saving trees by eliminating all of the paper usages in schools and printed books. We have advances in health and products that save us time.
However, in spite of all the changes, all of the technology, all of the progress, … God remains the same. His love remains the same. His Word remains the same. His instructions for our lives remain the same. And his free gift of salvation remains the same and is still available. But we don’t know how much time we have left in these earthly bodies. Even with all of the grand advances, our physical bodies are going to pass…
- “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Genesis 3:19 KJV
And we will face judgment.
- “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27 KJV
We will either be given a new body in Heaven and live with Jesus forever,…
- “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.” Philippians 3:20-21 KJV
Or we will live in eternal torment because we refused to accept Jesus’ love and sacrifice and CHOSE to take the punishment for our sins upon ourselves.
- “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” Matthew 25:46 KJV
Our world may have changed, but God has not.
- “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8 KJV
- “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8 KJV
- “For I am the Lord, I change not…” Malachi 3:6 KJV
- “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” Isaiah 40:8 KJV
Time is of the essence. If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Savior, don’t wait. Enter into a personal relationship with Him today. If you have accepted Jesus, but you know someone who hasn’t, don’t wait. Tell them about Jesus. Tell them what He has done for you.
Time is of the essence. Let’s let the love of Jesus shine through our lives. Let’s change the world for JESUS. After all, He changed forever for us.
Technology is good sometimes. The “new and improved can be good. God and his laws are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow! “New and improved ” does not mean GOD or his word.
You are so right. You know, when I think back to my research papers, I can only imagine how much better my papers would have been and how much less time it would have taken with today’s technology. But I also see how our kids aren’t reaping the advantages of this technology, but instead are suffering the damages left by social media and the time spent staring at the screen that has nothing to do with education or research. But no matter how much changes in our world and no matter how much our culture changes, God never changes nor does His Word. The Bible is the rule book (our instruction manual)
for our lives.

I love this. It is refreshing to hear absolute truth delineated so succinctly and clearly. I also love the old story about the devil talking with three of his minions about how to catch people successfully. The first two laid out hypotheses, but the devil rejected them. The third gained his approval. His method was to convince them there was plenty of time. Where salvation is concerned, a postponed decision is a negative decision.
I am so happy you liked this post. This message has been weighing heavily on my heart. I have two teenagers, and sometimes, as I see some of the changes in our world and in our schools that clearly go against God’s Word, fear creeps in. But then, I remind myself that God is in control… He has already won the battle. We just have to make sure we are ready for His return and tell as many people as we can about His love because we may still be here tomorrow, but then again, we might not. I also love the story you shared… because that is how our enemy works.

God is truly in charge. Sometimes the things we go through prepare us for even greater challenges ahead. What we can do for our children is PRAY for them, with them, and over them. And then Educate them abour the spiritual warfare that is all too common these days in every quarter. Blessings on you and your teenagers.
Amen. I agree. We need to ‘pray without ceasing,’ and your words bring to my mind Proverbs 22:6. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” If we educate our kids and bring them up in the Word of God, even if they veer or sway, they will return to their faith. Thank you for your comment and for your prayers!
