Quenching the Thirst

This week I studied the story of the woman at the well in the book of John, chapter four. And as I read the verses, I couldn’t help but think about the void that had been in this woman’s life, that same void that so many of us have felt. People are always in search of fulfillment. Some think a relationship will fill it. Some seek to fill it with stuff, the latest and greatest gadget. Our young people seek to be accepted by friends, maybe in hopes that being a part of the in-crowd will give them fulfillment. A lot of young girls fall victim to eating disorders as they try to find acceptance and love by attaining what society has led them to believe is the perfect body image.

In the story of the woman at the well, the Bible tells us that this woman had been married five times, and at the time she had this encounter with Jesus at the well, she is with a man that is not her husband. Looking at the story a little deeper, this woman is at the well to draw water alone. No one else is present. She is not there with friends or a group of other women. That being said, I picture a woman in great need of love, a woman seeking to feel worthy, a woman seeking for someone or something to fill that aching hole in her heart. But the problem is she is seeking acceptance and fulfillment in the wrong things… things this world says will provide fulfillment. But look what Jesus says in John 4:13.

  • “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again.” John 4:13 KJV

Jesus is speaking of earthly water. When we try to fill that void with earthly things, that void will quickly reappear. We will be thirsty again. However, Jesus goes on in the next verse to tell the woman how she can quench her thirst permanently.

  • “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:14 KJV

The thirst that we have can only be quenched with a relationship with Jesus. When we ask Jesus to live in our hearts and put Him first, we can have that peace and joy (a well of water springing up in us) in knowing we are never alone.

Bible Verse For This Week:

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27 KJV
