Promises

Promises
Promises

By F. D. Adkins

Her mom promised she would take her to the park today, but then her mom had to work late. His dad promised they would pass the football after school, but then his dad came down with the flu.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we always kept our promises? Wouldn’t it be nice if we always did what we said we were going to do?

God does. If God tells us something is going to happen, we can count on it happening. If God tells us He is going to do something, we can count on Him to do it.

God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or they would die. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they experienced spiritual death as they were immediately separated from God, and from that point on, man begin to age and experienced physical death.

  • “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:17 KJV
  • “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Genesis 3:19 KJV

God told Noah that He was going to destroy life on earth with a flood, but that He would keep Noah and his family safe in the ark.

  • “And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.” Genesis 7:1 KJV
  • “And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.” Genesis 7:23 KJV

God told Sarah that she would have a child.

  • “And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son….” Genesis 18:10 KJV
  • “And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.” Genesis 21:1-2 KJV

Now let’s take a look at Bible prophecy fulfilled about the birth of our Savior.

  • (Old Testament) “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14 KJV
  • (New Testament) “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. “ Matthew 1:18 KJV; “Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Matthew 1:22-23 KJV

Jesus told his disciples that He would be killed and rise after three days.

  • “For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.” Mark 9:31 KJV

We should never make promises that we aren’t sure we can keep. But hard as we try, we don’t know what tomorrow holds. We will make promises that we can’t keep, and people will break promises that they make to us.

But God…

GOD ALWAYS KEEPS HIS PROMISES.

We can always count on God to keep His word. So, if God never breaks a promise, we know:

  • We are never alone.
    • “…for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5 KJV
    • “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 42:10 KJV
  • Jesus is coming back.
    • “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:3 KJV

Let us feel the comfort and security of God’s promises. And let us be ready when He comes to take us home.
