Every word… not one word… not part of the words… but EVERY WORD. Jesus said to the devil in Matthew 4:4 (KJV), “…Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
I finished my study on the Book of Job. I have already shared several parts of this study that I have paused to reflect on, and well, I couldn’t move on without sharing one more. As I think of Job and all that he lost… and on top of that, the isolation and loneliness that he must have felt without the encouragement from his wife and then the accusations from his friends, the question arises… how did he remain steadfast in his faith? And then I am reminded of my grandmother… and all the loss and stress she suffered, yet her faith stood strong. In Job 23:12, Job declares, “…I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food”. (KJV) And friend, I never remember going into my grandmother’s house without seeing her Bible open. In Ephesians 6:17, Paul details one of the pieces of the armor of God as he says, “…the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (KJV). When Job says that he had “esteemed the words of His mouth more than his necessary food” (Job 23:12 KJV), I think this reflects the importance of Bible study daily. He knew Truth. He was on the offense, armed with the Word of God, and when Satan attacked with the goal to pull Job away from God, Job was able to defend himself against the enemy. And I believe that is how my grandmother stood strong. As much as my grandmother loved to eat, she desired to read her Bible even more, and her faith showed it. So, as we battle the ups and downs, trying to dodge the arrows and jump the hurdles that the devil keeps sending our way, may we study God’s Word daily and “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for He is faithful that promised)” (Hebrews 10:23 KJV).
