The Bible details a beautiful story of true friendship between Jonathan, the son of King Saul, and David, who would later become King. 1 Samuel 18:1 (KJV) describes this close friendship by saying, “… that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” We go on to learn in 1 Samuel 18:3-4 that they make a covenant of their friendship, and Jonathan even gives David his royal robe and sword and bow.
Then, Proverbs 27:17 explains the tremendous impact one friend can have on another.
- “ Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” Proverbs 27:17 KJV
I am writing about friendship this week because, this past few weeks, I have been deeply affected, touched, sharpened, and lifted by friendship. With the release of my first novel, I had no idea what to expect, but I was prepared for criticism because I was afraid no one would like it. And, this being my first novel, and of course, as with any piece of writing, I had poured so much of myself into it. So, all these negative thoughts and doubts flooded my mind.
However, these last two weeks have been the opposite of all those negative thoughts. I have been blessed by true friendship. Friends who spent hours and hours reading my book. Friends who were so excited when they received my book that they sent me pictures when it came in the mail. Friends who told other people about my book. Friends who shared on their social media. Friends who complimented my book on social media. Friends who took the time to sharpen, encourage, and motivate me to keep writing.
I am so thankful, because as “iron sharpens iron”, God has blessed me with a multitude of friendships that have sharpened me more than they will ever realize.
