Scripture Reading: John 4:1-30

“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:14 KJV

She took each step without much thought of where she was going. She walked the same path every day… alone. She didn’t want to be alone. Nonetheless, that’s the way it was. In her desperation, she’d known more men than she cared to admit, even married several of them, but every attempt provided only a brief euphoria, then left her even lonelier than before… a temporary fix just like the water she drew from the well every day. Tomorrow, she would be thirsty and make this trek again. It was as if whatever she was lacking, whatever she needed to fill this hole in her heart, was as vital to her existence as air. As she stepped up to the well, she was taken aback as this man spoke to her. He wasn’t just any man. He was a Jew. Jews didn’t associate with Samaritans. Little did she know, this was the man she had been searching for her entire life.

In the beginning, we were created in God’s image, and from the beginning we were meant to be in a relationship with God, walking and communing with Him as Adam and Eve did before they chose to listen to the enemy and follow their own selfish desires rather than God. From that point on, the problem of sin disrupted creation and separated humans from God. Yet, because we were created to have a relationship with God, we have this void that can only be filled by Him.

In John 4:1-30, a Samaritan woman goes to the well to draw water. There she encounters Jesus. He uses her daily journey to get water as an analogy for the eternal life… the fulfilled life… that comes in a relationship with Him. The water from the well only quenched her physical thirst temporarily… just as the men had only provided a temporary patch on her emptiness that was meant to be filled by God. Jesus doesn’t condemn her for her past. He meets her where she is… in the midst of her need…

Jesus left His glory in heaven and came to earth as a man. Fully God and fully man, He took our punishment and bridged the chasm that our fallenness had created between God and us. We needed a Savior. Jesus met us where we were…

If you haven’t placed your faith in Christ as your Savior, don’t wait. He’ll meet you where you are.
